This universal distress call was defined in 1923 by Frederick Stanley Mockford, the senior radio officer at Croydon Airport in London. Tasked with finding a term to signal distress that would be easily understood by all pilots and ground staff in emergencies, Mockford chose an anglicized phonetic transcription of the French expression "m’aider" (a shortened version of "venez m’aider," meaning "come help me"). This expression, used by a distressed French pilot two years earlier, had been understood by an English operator as "Mayday."
Most flights arriving at Croydon at the time originated from Le Bourget Airport in France.
The use of "Mayday" was prescribed by the 1927 Washington Conference of the International Radio Telegraph Convention and has been applicable to air and sea transport since January 1, 1929.
